Managing nausea

Stay hydrated

  • Take slow and frequent sips.
  • Avoid drinking large amounts of fluids at once.

Try to eat something

  • Eat bland and easily digestible foods such as smoothies, bananas, rice, soups, etc.
  • Avoid fatty, spicy, or greasy foods.
  • Consume small or frequent meals.

Rest and try to relax

  • Lie down or recline in a position that feels most comfortable.
  • Take slow, deep breaths, and focus on relaxation techniques such as deep breathing exercises.
  • Avoid strong smells or excessive movement.
  • After eating, rest in an upright or reclining position. Avoid lying flat for at least an hour after meals.

Try natural remedies

  • Ginger: Try ginger tea, ginger candies, or ginger capsules.
  • Lemon: Try lemon tea or lemon drops.
  • Peppermint: Try peppermint tea or smell peppermint oil.
  • Wear an acupressure band (such as Seaband).
  • Try acupuncture (only in consultation with the healthcare team).

Get medication and treat related issues

  • Undertake regular mouth care.
  • If anti-sickness tablets have been prescribed consider using them in line with the provided guidance.
  • Treat stomach or digestion problems, such as constipation.
  • If required, consult with the healthcare provider for suitable medicines or for a medication review.

Vomiting

  • Have a suitable vomit bowl at hand and ready for use.
  • Being in the sitting position is best for vomiting.
  • If unable to sit, laying on one side with a supported head is best to protect the airways.
