Signs of vomiting

Throwing up, sometimes with little warning, making it hard to keep food or liquids down.

These are common issues associated with vomiting:

  • Constant nausea
  • Gagging, retching or dry heaving
  • Loss of appetite or a decreased desire to eat
  • Feeling thirsty and dehydrated
  • Pain or discomfort in the stomach
  • Increased sensitivity to smells

Pay special attention to these symptoms when the vomiting gets out of control:

  • Spots of blood in vomit - inform the medical team as soon as possible
  • Lots of blood in vomit - contact emergency services immediately
  • Constipation or bloody stool - inform the medical team as soon as possible
  • Persistent or severe vomiting
  • New shortness of breath
  • Fever (temperature over 38℃/100.4℉)
  • Changed mental state, confusion, or blurred vision
  • Increased heart rate or palpitations
  • Unbearable abdominal pain
  • Difficulty swallowing
