Signs of fatigue

Feeling extremely tired, low on energy and finding it hard to concentrate. Fatigue is a common issue in life-limiting illnesses, but is not reported or treated as much as it should be.

These are common signs of fatigue:

  • Feeling extremely tired, weak, or heavy-limbed
  • Experiencing disturbed sleep or an increased need for rest or sleep
  • Struggling with concentration, remembering things, or unclear thinking
  • Losing interest or motivation in normal or enjoyable activities
  • Feeling irritable, moody, sad, or teary
  • Having difficulties with physical tasks that were previously easy or simple

Pay special attention to these symptoms when the fatigue gets worse:

  • Increased pain
  • Shortness of breath, breathing difficulties, or a rapid breathing rate
  • Rapid or irregular heartbeat
  • Swelling in the legs, ankles, feet or stomach
  • Confusion, disorientation or other changes in mental status
  • Loss of appetite or weight loss
  • Nausea, vomiting or constipation
  • Changes in urination or bowel movements
  • Signs of dehydration
  • Rapid loss of strength, mobility, and independence

Do not hesitate to reach out to a medical professional if you are at all concerned. Any significant change in symptoms, or the sudden onset of new symptoms, should be evaluated as soon as possible by a healthcare professional.
