Managing pain at home

Create a comfortable and supportive environment

  • Provide a comfortable bed and add extra cushions or blankets.
  • Adjust the room temperature and lighting.
  • Distract with conversation, music, entertainment, or enjoyable activities.

Explore relaxation techniques

  • Practice slow, deep breathing. Inhale through the nose, and exhale slowly through the mouth.
  • Try gently massaging the pain point with essential oils - if it can be tolerated.

Promote blood circulation

  • Move within the comfort level, if possible stretch or do a low-impact activity. This can promote circulation and alleviate pain.
  • Try heat or cold therapy by using heating pads, warm towels, or ice packs on the pain point.
  • Change positions frequently.

Pain medication

  • Ensure pain medications are taken as prescribed and on schedule. Taking medication regularly is better than waiting for the pain to occur.
  • Consult with the healthcare team to adjust the medication schedule if needed.

If you are unsure about what is causing or how to manage the pain, speak to your doctor or nurse, they can advise how to best manage it.
