Signs of fever

Increase in body temperatures, typically over 38°C/100.4℉.

These are common signs of fever:

  • Increased body temperature, typically over 38°C/100.4℉
  • Feeling hot or flushed
  • Chills, shivering and/or sweating
  • Body aches, fatigue, weakness, and loss of appetite
  • Headaches

Pay special attention to these symptoms when the fever also includes one or more of the following:

  • Increased or rapid heart rate (greater than 100 beats per minute, at rest)
  • Constant low blood pressure or sudden drop in blood pressure
  • Increased breathing rate, difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
  • Sharp chest pain or pain on breathing
  • Severe coughing, especially coughing up blood or mucus that's a strange color (not white or clear)
  • Reduced urine output
  • Altered mental state, such as confusion, irritability or delirium
  • Decreased responsiveness or loss of consciousness
  • Seizures or uncontrolled movements
  • Neck stiffness and/or sensitivity to light
