Signs of dry eyes

Dry eyes occur when the eyes aren't sufficiently lubricated, leading to discomfort. This can be a result of the illness, treatments, medication side effects, or environmental factors.

These are common signs of dry eyes:

  • Stinging or burning sensation in the eyes
  • A feeling of something foreign in the eyes
  • Eye tiredness
  • Blurred vision
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Redness in the eye
  • Frequent blinking or rubbing of the eyes
  • Stringy mucus around or in the eyes
  • Increased eye irritation from environmental factors, such as smoke, wind, or air-conditioned spaces

Pay special attention to these symptoms when dry eyes lead to complications or added discomfort:

  • Inflammation, swelling or redness of the eye surface (cornea)
  • Extreme sensitivity to light
  • Yellow or green discharge from the eye
  • Swollen or red eyelids that are warm to the touch
  • Difficulty in opening or closing eyes
  • Severe pain
  • Sudden or significant decrease in vision
  • A visible white or grayish spot on the surface of the eye (cornea)
  • Ulcers or scars on the surface of the eye (cornea)
  • Continuous or repeated eye infections

Do not hesitate to reach out to a medical professional if you are at all concerned. Any significant change in symptoms, or the sudden onset of new symptoms, should be evaluated as soon as possible by a healthcare professional.
