Signs of diarrhea

Loose or watery stool with more frequent or sudden bowel movements. It can be acute (lasting 1-2 days), or persistent (lasting for weeks).

These are common signs of diarrhea:

  • Loose or watery stools, usually more than three times a day.
  • Frequent, urgent, and uncontrolled bowel movements.
  • Stomach cramps and pain
  • Bloating or a feeling of fullness in the stomach
  • Signs of dehydration, like dry mouth, thirst or reduced need to urinate

Pay special attention to these symptoms when diarrhea worsens:

  • Fever (temperature over 38℃/100.4℉)
  • Discolored stool, blood or mucus in the stool
  • Quick or unexplained weight loss
  • Heart racing or beating irregularly
  • Reduced urine output or dark-colored urine
  • Lightheadedness or confusion
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Unusual sensations, like numbness, twitching or even seizures
  • Sudden feeling very weak or tired
  • Sores or bumps in or around the anal area, or hemorrhoids

Do not hesitate to reach out to a medical professional if you are at all concerned. Any significant change in symptoms, or the sudden onset of new symptoms, should be evaluated as soon as possible by a healthcare professional.
