Signs of bloating

Bloating refers to a feeling of fullness or swelling in the abdomen. It's a common issue that can result from diet, medications, or underlying health conditions. Bloating can be uncomfortable and impact daily activities and overall comfort.

These are common signs of bloating:

  • A noticeable increase in abdominal (belly) size
  • A sensation of tightness around the stomach
  • Discomfort or pain in the abdominal area
  • Feeling full abnormally quickly when eating
  • Increased belching or flatulence
  • An abnormally gurgling or rumbling stomach
  • Temporary relief of discomfort after passing gas or having a bowel movement

Pay special attention to these symptoms when the bloating worsens:

  • Changes in bowel habits, such as prolonged constipation or diarrhea
  • Severe or persistent abdominal pain or cramping
  • Vomiting or nausea along with bloating
  • Rapid abdominal swelling (this may indicate a serious health issue, seek medical care urgently)
  • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath due to abdominal pressure
  • Unintentional weight loss
  • Fever (temperature over 38℃/100.4℉) or signs of infection
  • Lack of bowel sounds (silence in the abdomen usually filled with digestive noises)

Do not hesitate to reach out to a medical professional if you are at all concerned. Any significant change in symptoms, or the sudden onset of new symptoms, should be evaluated immediately by a healthcare professional.
