Preventing common skin issues

Good skincare habits can make a significant difference in preventing common issues like rashes, wounds, and ulcers. The risks of skin injury and wounds are greatly increased with immobility, some medications (like steroids), dehydration and weight loss. Here are some tips to consider:

Stay hydrated and eat right

  • Drink enough water daily.
  • Eat a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals, and maintain a good calorie intake.

Take protective steps

  • Use protective padding or clothing when there's a risk of injuries such as skin tears.
  • Choose well-fitting shoes and clothes to minimize friction.
  • Make spaces clutter-free, well-lit, and easy to move around in. Remove or cover up any furniture with sharp corners or edges.
  • Limit direct sun exposure. Always apply sunscreen to shield the skin if sun exposure occurs.
  • For tailored home improvement advice, consult an occupational therapist.

Manage pressure points

  • Change positions regularly while lying or sitting to distribute pressure evenly.
  • If someone can't move on their own, it's important to help them adjust their position at least every two hours. The use of manual handling aids (e.g. sliding sheets, handling aids or hoists) is recommended.
  • Use pillows or foam pads in beds or seating areas to minimize pressure.
  • Lift swollen areas, such as feet, to enhance blood flow and reduce swelling.
  • Consider heel wedges or heel protection devices.
  • Your healthcare team can advise if there is high risk of skin breakdown or ulcers. If so, specialist air-mattresses and cushions are good options to protect the skin.

Adopt a gentle skincare routine

  • Use warm instead of hot water when washing. Avoid long, hot showers or baths. Pat skin dry rather than rubbing.
  • Gently cleanse the skin using hypoallergenic products, pay special attention to hands and feet
  • Use mild moisturizing creams or lotions regularly, especially after showers.
  • Routinely check the skin, especially bony areas, for any early signs of sores or redness.
  • Avoid skin products that cause irritation or trigger skin reactions.
  • Keep skin clean and dry, change incontinence products often to prevent irritation.

Prevent infections

  • Ensure proper and regular hand hygiene.
  • Clean any open wounds or cuts promptly and keep them covered if advised.
  • Avoid scratching or picking at skin irritations.
  • Use dressings that are gentle on the skin, such as non-adherent and non-adhesive dressings.

Improve indoor environment

  • Consider using a humidifier for added air moisture.
  • Dress comfortably to match room temperature to reduce sweating and to avoid skin irritation.
  • Wear clothes that reduce the risk of skin tears, such as long sleeves, long trousers, knee-high socks, and appropriate footwear.
  • Ensure rooms are well-ventilated.

These tips can go a long way in preventing skin irritations, tears and wounds. Regularly check in with the healthcare team for more personalized advice if needed.
