Preventing constipation
Dietary changes
- Add more fiber-rich foods into the diet, like fruits, vegetables, beans and wholegrain foods. Consider fiber supplements if needed.
- Drink plenty of water and other fluids, as it helps soften the stool.
- Opt for fluid-rich dishes like soups and porridge.
- Limit intake of processed foods.
Regular toilet habits
- Try to use the toilet at the same time daily, ideally after meals, to establish a consistent bowel routine.
- Ensure privacy and allow ample time during bowel movements.
Physical activity and mobility
- Engage in light physical activities, like walking or simple exercises.
- While on the toilet, find a comfortable position. Use a footstool or elevated toilet seat to ease bowel movements.
Preventative medications
- Some medications can contribute to constipation, like some pain-killers, iron supplements, and antacids. Laxatives are often prescribed together with these medications to prevent constipation.
- Discuss with the healthcare team and take laxatives regularly and as prescribed.

Nutrition and hydration tips
- Ensure adequate and regular hydration.

- A hot caffeinated drink (such as coffee) can increase the urge to pass stool and help with toilet routine, if taken at the same time each day.
Treating constipation
Address the impacted stool
- Use stool softeners.
- Do a short-term course of oral laxatives.
- In some cases, the healthcare team might recommend enemas, suppositories, or rectal laxatives.
- If other methods are ineffective, seek medical assistance for manual removal of stool.
Medication management
- Discuss with the healthcare team about medicines and potential side effects related to constipation. Modify medication schedules and dosages as needed.
If you are unsure about what is causing or how to manage constipation, speak to your nurse or doctor, they can advise how to best manage it.
