Managing breathlessness at home
Change positions
- Sit upright. This helps the lungs fill up with air and takes some pressure off the muscle under the lungs which makes breathing easier.
- Lean forward and rest the arms on a table or a sturdy surface. This can help the chest muscles relax and make it easier for more air to get into the lungs.
Medications
- If oxygen is in use, check that the cylinder/compressor are on, working, and still supplying oxygen.
- If inhaled or other medications are prescribed for breathlessness, use as directed.
Reduce anxiety
- Practice controlled deep and slow breathing, inhale through the nose and exhale through the mouth slowly.
- Stay hydrated by sipping water, if possible.
- Reassure and support the care recipient, speak in a calming manner and offer reassurance that the episode will pass.
Create a draft of air
- Open a window.
- Place a standing fan or desk fan nearby or use a hand-held fan.
If you are unsure about what is causing or how to manage the breathlessness, speak to your doctor or nurse, they can advise how to best manage it.
